The common Snook, also known as the sergeant fish or robalo, is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from the coast of the North Carolina to Brazil including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Many believe that snook originated in Central America and that changes in the earth’s weather is what brought the snook to Florida.
Considered an excellent food fish, the common snook is fished commercially and foreign caught fish are sold in the USA. When cooking snook, the skin must be removed, because otherwise it imparts an unpleasant taste, described as soapy, to the fish. Snook is also prized as a game fish, being known for their great fighting capabilities.
Recently, we took a charter group out for some Inshore fishing. The guys were excited, since they were from out of town, but ad heard about the amazing sport fishing down south. After a few casts off the side of the boat, one of the guys hooked onto something and was a wild one! The fisherman held and fought with the catch on the end of the line for a while and after a good tug of war, the guy pulled up a beautiful (and tired!) snook! It will give you a run for your money, but a fun fish to wrestle with if you’re lucky enough to hook one!
